Scenes from my Pantry: Split Pea Soup with Ham
PUBLISHED ON: 03.08.2014
It is almost spring! We have one last cool weather soup hurrah before winter is officially over. In honor of hearty and comforting soups I bring to you…..Split Pea with Ham.
Split Pea Soup with Ham
Serves 6-8
Ingredients:
1-lb dried split peas, rinsed and drained
2- quarts vegetable or chicken broth
1 ham bone
1 bay leaf
2 onions, chopped
3 carrots, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
A good pinch of dried thyme
Salt and black pepper to taste
2 teaspoons vegetable or olive oil
Directions:
1. Heat oil in a 4-quart pot. Add chopped carrots, celery and onions. Sauté until softened (about 5 minutes).
2. Add broth, split peas, ham bone, dried thyme, bay leaf, salt and black pepper.
3. Bring to a boil, then simmer covered for approximately 1-1/12 hours. Remove bone, cut-off meat, and return the ham to the soup. Cook another 30 minutes or until tender. Adjust seasonings to taste. Discard bay leaf. Ready to serve.
Enjoy!

I'm seeing soups everywhere right now. And it seems like just the right time for them as the weather transitions.

Delicious! I was just thinking about split pea soup with ham – I found some ham chunks in the freezer that would be great in the soup!

A staple in our house and for good reason. It looks wonderful

Velva, Great looking split pea soup! My wife and I both love great split pea soup and she usually whips up a batch or two each winter…enough for 6 – 8 bowls each time. Love your pork roast even more. Pork is my favorite! As for Miami…too much traffic and hassle…but great attractions and lots of terrific restaurants! Mid-winter…it's hard to beat! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

I can't believe this entire winter I haven't made Split Pea Soup once! I LOVE pea soup and now that you have reminded me, Velva, I really need to make it before Spring begins!!! (although, spring pea soup is yummy too:) Thank you so much for the reminder, and sharing…

Split pea and ham is one of my favorite soups, I love the stuff. Hated peas as a kid but now creamed peas and this dish are two of my favorites. Oooo I've got a half pound of jowl bacon on hold, maybe I should make split pea and bacon.

Split pea on a cold March Sunday? I have a great recipe too. But today, I'm pulling up a chair here.

I always save ham bones for split pea soup. It's a perfect marriage! I love your version and it makes me want to go buy a ham so I'll have to bone to make this soup! Great post, Velva! 🙂

I love pea soup, but I need to find a good veggie alternative for ham, so I can see what everyone is raving about since all my friends think it's much better with ham in!

In Australia it's always called pea and ham soup but I was raised calling it split pea soup. People look at me funny when I call it that. Your soup is calling me – my god that looks good.
